WCRS & VS
World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences

Dr. Kermani is co-founder and advisory board member of the World College of Refractive Surgery and Visual Sciences (WCRS&VS), founded in 2020.
The WCRS&VS has a vision to add value to ophthalmic organizations by supporting education and training, thereby promoting and expanding refractive surgery globally. In doing so, the WCRS acts as both a professional body and an umbrella organization representing refractive surgery as an ophthalmic specialty in its own right. WCRS considers refractive surgical treatment a universal human right and through its activities actively works to reduce the number of preventable blindnesses worldwide.
The philosophy of the WCRS&VS
The philosophy of refractive surgery is to restore visual function in cases of refractive error through the best possible treatment method for the individual. WCRS&VS believes that current methods of vision correction, such as eyeglasses or contact lenses, often limit patients in their daily lives. Refractive surgery, on the other hand, provides a long-term solution with up to complete restoration of physiological vision.
To provide the best possible patient care, the WCRS&VS places particular emphasis on international and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as regular exchange with professional bodies, professional associations and healthcare groups. In this context, the WCRS&VS also plans to establish collaborative programs for basic research, as well as clinical research with refractive surgery experts and healthcare companies.
The Board of Refractive Surgery
The WCRS&VS is the only global organization that offers certification in refractive surgery as an ophthalmic specialty. The focus is beeing set on qualification and quality standards in the education and training of ophthalmic surgeons and residents.
In order to provide both medical colleagues and all patients with complete transparency at all times, the WCRS&VS defines a recognized standard for the required qualifications and requirements for ophthalmic surgeons in the refractive field.
A program defined by the WCRS&VS verifies the skills of medical colleagues in terms of mastery of the internationally recognized standard curriculum in refractive surgery.
The WCRS&VS defines accreditation standards for worldwide teaching programs, fellowships and organizations.
In addition, a standardized board examination in refractive surgery must be passed.
The activities of the WCRS&VS
In addition to setting global quality standards in refractive surgery, the WCRS, as a private, nonprofit organization, along with its affiliated Visual Freedom Foundation (VFF), actively works to increase the quality and quantity of refractive surgical care worldwide.
Ophthalmologists and refractive surgeons, as certified members of WCRS&VS, experience the opportunity to provide their skills and knowledge and to expand them in a focused manner through dynamic dialogue with colleagues and patients. Through ophthalmic education and training, as well as courses and selected residency programs, the WCRS&VS actively advances clinical and scientific progress in the field of refractive surgery. The focus is on promoting and ensuring the highest quality of medical education. In this way, WCRS specifically contributes to increasing the number of refractive surgeons worldwide, thereby improving global availability, especially in disadvantaged populations.
